Good Bad Man
Under the direction of a three-way partnership among the San Fransisco Silent Film Festival, Cinémathèque Française, and Film Preservation Society, I collaborated with Minneapolis-based font designer, Chank Diesel to create this historic revival font for the preservation and restoration of the 1916 silent film, The Good Bad Man, starring Douglas Fairbanks. The only surviving examples of the original font are available in a 16mm abridged copy of a 1923 Tri-Stone rerelease of the film.
When the film was restored in 2014 for a screening at the San Francisco Film Festival, we illustrated the font with the intent to recreate the original lettering in the film. Formerly designed for silver screens, the new vintage-style font is now fully rendered in OpenType and available for digital and print use. Our work for The Good Bad Man has received international recognition for restoration, preservation, and returning to the screen.
